Ivy Vining
Fashion Design InstructorIVY’S BIO
Ivy Vining is a fashion and costume designer whose expertise spans both the home sewing and industrial markets. With 35 years of sewing experience and 10 years of teaching experience in sewing and pattern drafting, she helps anyone from complete beginners to seasoned and advanced sewists improve their skills and bring their ideas to life.
With both a grandmother and great-grandmother who were costume designers/seamstresses, it’s no surprise that Ivy has been sewing since the age of 5 after inheriting her grandmother’s sewing machine and giant stash of vintage fabrics and patterns. After graduating with a degree in Fashion Design from the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising in Los Angeles (FIDM), Ivy worked numerous fashion industry design jobs before deciding to focus on custom work and teaching, where she could showcase her skills in intricate garment construction techniques. Her custom work in both fashion and costume ranges from bridal to drag, and she looks at each custom piece as an opportunity to learn (or figure out!) something new. Upon deciding to go into teaching, Ivy found unexpected joy in sharing all of her sewing and patternmaking knowledge with others, having spent multiple years acting as the Education Director/Instructor of Sewing Arts Center Santa Monica, and later a full time professor of Patternmaking, Draping, and Industry Sewing at her alma mater, FIDM Los Angeles.
Ivy currently teaches new machine classes for Advanced Machines and Sergers at Meissner Sewing, private in-home lessons in the Sacramento area, and runs her business Haus of Vining, which consists of a continually expanding line of pattern blocks for patternmakers, fashion sewing patterns for sewists, and video tutorials to help all sewists live up to their full potential.
